Lizzie Parsons says…I have just brought out a collection of illustrated poetry books which I have been working on for the past two years. They follow an overarching thread, a healing journey along Joanna Macey’s ‘Spiral of Reconnection’, part of ‘The Work that Reconnects’. They have an ecological and spiritual focus, and are grouped in four parts, written over the past two years. If anyone from St. John’s congregation would like to buy copies I will donate a third of the sales price to the church. You can get them on Etsy – https://www.etsy.com/shop/LizzieAParsons, (remember to add a message saying you are from St J’s!) or contact me via the Church Office to bypass postage – pastadmin@stjohnsdumfries.org. I am also hoping to run a creative writing workshop on this subject in the town centre this Autumn, so let me know if you’d be interested in joining. Thank you!

The MU will recommence on Thursday 2nd September at 2pm with Eucharist in church followed by the AGM in the hall. We will still have to socially distance and wear masks. Looking forward to meeting up with everyone at last and planning our new programme.

Going forward in September and October we are planning to resume some church activities like choir rehearsals, Mothers’ Union, quiz evenings, indoor bowling, nursery mornings etc, so please keep an eye on the notices for the start dates and additional details. In September we would like to resume tea and coffee after Sunday morning worship, but at present we do not have enough helpers, so please if you can help let Jenny Lawson or David Kerr know.

From Harvest Sunday (03/10/2021), we plan to restart our regular collection of items for First Base Food Bank. Current intention is that there will be some stackable crates beside the lit noticeboard just inside the glass doors, into which items can be placed. Keep an eye out and watch for further announcements.

In the meantime, here’s the pattern of services etc we can envisage just now:

Now:

  • Sung Eucharist (1982) at 11.00am every Sunday
  • There will continue to be an online service every Sunday (see website: www.stjohnsdumfries.org)
  • Wednesday Morning Eucharist is at 10:30am every Wednesday
  • Romanian Orthodox Service is the first Saturday of the month, the next one is Saturday 4th September at 10:15am
  • Church open for private prayer & reflection 2-4pm on a Tuesday and 10am-12noon on a Friday

Starting September:

  • Meditation will resume in the Meeting Room at 5:45pm on a Tuesday and we will continue with the online meditation as well (see Website: www.stjohnsdumfries.org).
  • Tuesday Evening Eucharist at 6:30pm will resume.
  • Godly Play will resume in the church hall on the first and third Sundays of the month and on the second and fourth Sundays activity bags will be made for children who may attend the 11.00 am Eucharistic Service
  • Saints’ Days will resume (subject to personnel availability) at 6:30pm (when they fall Monday to Thursday) and at 5pm (when they fall on Friday and Saturday).

Starting October:

  • 1st Sunday of the month will be Holy Communion at 8am beginning in October, Sunday 3rd October.
  • Choral Evensong will resume on Sunday 3rd October at 6pm, and thereafter the first Sunday of the month
  • Evensong will resume on Sunday 17th October at 6pm and thereafter on the third Sunday of the month.
  • All Age Worship will be replaced by a Contemporary Service beginning on 10th October at 6pm. The Contemporary Service will meet thereafter on the second and fourth Sundays of the month.
  • Prayer Meeting will be on Thursday 7th October at 7:30pm in the Rectory. Thereafter every first Thursday of the month. The prayer meeting will sometimes be face to face and at other times on Zoom.
  • Bible Discussion Group will be on Thursday 28th October at 7pm. Thereafter it will be on the fourth Thursday of the month, sometimes face to face and at other times via Zoom. In October we will meet in the Rectory.

Do I Need To Book?

  • For Sunday and Wednesday services, it’s helpful if you do. Please call 07572 006290. Since we still need to record who attends any event, it’s easier if we can just tick your name, rather than having to write details down. If you can, please book by 4pm on a Friday (for Sunday) and 4pm on a Monday (for Wednesday): helps with list printing.
  • If you miss the ‘deadline’, don’t worry – come anyway; you’re just as welcome.
  • For other ‘in person’ events, just show up (though we will need to record your details).
  • For most Zoom events (unless otherwise advertised), contact 07487 653069 for joining details.
  • Face coverings (unless exempt) & some restrictions are still required at services in the church. Other events may vary.

Welcome
