SUMMARY OF THE LAW
Our Lord Jesus Christ said: The first commandment is this:
Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is the only Lord. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength.”
The second is this: “Love your neighbour as yourself.” There is no other commandment greater than these. Amen. Lord, have mercy.
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION
God is love and we are God’s children. There is no room for fear in love. We love because God loved us first.
Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith.

God our Father,
we confess to you
and to our fellow members in the Body of Christ

and in what we have failed to do.
We are truly sorry.
Forgive us our sins,
and deliver us from the power of evil,

God, who is both power and love,
forgive you and free you from your sins,
heal and strengthen you by the Holy Spirit,

1 The hand of the LORD came upon me, and he brought me out by the spirit of the LORD and set me down in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones.
2 He led me all around them; there were very many lying in the valley, and they were very dry. 3 He said to me, ‘Mortal, can these bones live?’ I answered, ‘O Lord GOD, you know.’ 4 Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy to these bones, and say to them: O dry bones, hear the word of the LORD. 5 Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. 6 I will lay sinews on you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the LORD.’

To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7For this reason the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law – indeed it cannot, 8and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

9 But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit that dwells in you.

17 When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, some two miles away, 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them about their brother. 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary stayed at home. 21 Martha said to Jesus, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask of him.’ 23 Jesus said to her, ‘Your brother will rise again.’ 24 Martha said to him, ‘I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.’ 25 Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live,
26 and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. SERMON
We continue our journey of preparation and anticipation through this season of Lent. We come ever nearer to once more remembering and celebrating the events which sit at the heart of our faith – the events without which we have no faith – our Lord’s crucifixion and resurrection. Today, on this the 5th Sunday in Lent, Passion Sunday, our focus becomes the Victory of the Cross and all that flows from that victory for us and for our world.
Our Gospel reading today tells of the raising of Lazarus. As with all the accounts of miraculous events in the Gospel of John, the raising of Lazarus is told as a sign to point us to who Jesus is, why He is come among us and what He will do. So Jesus says to Martha: “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live …” [John 11 v 25] Life – the possibility of life for all, both now in this world and through eternity – flowing from the fact of crucifixion and resurrection, for without, first, the suffering of crucifixion there can be no resurrection.
If we look out on our world today, we see so much which denies life to so many. We see so much which dehumanises, which denies our common humanity, which devalues others and so denies life. Many live today in places of war and conflict, where life becomes no more than trying to survive each day, a life filled with constant fear. Many in our world lack the basic necessities of life, which most of us take for granted – clean water, food, shelter. Many in our world feel that their lives lack meaning or purpose. The need of our world for hope, for justice, for peace – for life in all its fulness for all people, whoever they are and wherever they may be – is clear.
And Jesus says to you and to me – to all people – “I am the resurrection and the life.” In Him is the possibility of life in all its fulness for all people for all time.
The truth that we believe, that we proclaim, that we offer to the world , is that the very nature of God is love; that the love of God lies at the heart of all that is, and that love of God is made real for each and every one of us in the person of Jesus. God loves each one of us so much that He is come to us in Jesus, living our life, dying our death and raised to glory. In His living and dying – as we open ourselves to Him – we know ourselves loved; we know our lives have value; we discover meaning and purpose in our lives; we find hope. This is the Victory of the Cross.
And then we are challenged to work with all of good will to make real that hope in our world. Because of Jesus, we work in this God’s world to build here His Kingdom of love, justice, peace and hope – life – for all.
Jesus said to Martha all those years ago and, today, He says to you and to me: “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live …”

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

PRAYERS
Merciful Father accept these prayers for the sake of your Son,
our Saviour Jesus Christ who taught us to pray together
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those
who sin against us.
Do not bring us
to the time of trial
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power
and the glory are yours,
now and forever. Amen.

Christ the Son of God gladden your hearts with the good news of his kingdom; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.
